Let’s take a trip to Tavira! This town in southeastern Portugal is an easy day trip from Seville, so we went there not too long ago with a couple of our friends who were visiting from Germany.

Tavira is quite popular with Spaniards and other tourists who want to get away, and it mainly survives on tourism these days after being a successful fishing village for many, many years.

Tavira is quite flat, which is a hefty change from the western Algarve, with its cliffs and dramatic scenery. Nonetheless, Tavira is an enjoyable stop. It is an historic city with a lot of interesting architecture and hidden backstreets, which can easily be walked in a day.

First things first, though. As usual, we had to find a spot to stop for coffee and cake.

Naturally, we had to include a pastéis de nata, which is more or less Portugal’s national pastry. And when you find a good one, you find a good one. Many noms!

After those tasty treats, we spent nearly all of our time wandering around town, checking out the buildings and whatnot.

We also found what seems like it would be a great house. 🙂

Circling back toward the river after jumping in and out of little streets here and there, we found a nice, small park with a gazebo.

There are a lot more interesting buildings along the river as well, although as is the case with a lot of areas in town, they can be rather, unfortunately run-down here and there.

If you’re so inclined, you can also head down to where the river meets the ocean. There’s not a ton to see down there, but I always enjoy checking out a beach, the water, or some boats.

And that’s a short stroll through Tavira! It’s definitely worth at least a stop during the day. And during better weather or the higher seasons, it’s surely bustling and more on the exciting side.
